Nutrition & Education

Nutrition and Education are tightly linked.  Hungry children attend school less frequently and find it hard to concentrate when they do.

Partnered with local governments, schools and parents we address be needs of malnourished children through our 100 day nutrition programs, serving balanced, highly nutritious meals in schools and community centers. More

In addition to malnourished children 12 and under we also feed pregnant/lactating mothers to help ensure healthy infants.

We operate 3 community Learning and Gardening Centers (large farms) which produce the vegetables and fruits used in our nutrition programs.  Rice is provided by local partners while protein is currently purchased 

Fruits and vegetables from our 3 large farming sites, combined with rice donated by local stakeholders and protein purchased locally are prepared and served by volunteer teachers, parents, neighbors and community health workers.

All meals are prepared in accordance with Pinggang Pinoy, the national Filipino nutritional guidelines for proper child nutrition.

The malnourished or under nourished children we feed are identified and tracked by local community health workers.  These workers continue to monitor children after leaving our programs and if needed children may join a later program if the need may arise.

Parent Education can have a dramatic impact upon the poor who often have a 2nd or 3rd grade education.   Lack of education limits their income, reduces the families food supply and limits their paternal caregiving knowledge and practices.

Our Nutrition and Education Coordinators visit the parents of each child participating in our program, assessing living conditions, the child's health history and parental health and nutrition awareness . We then teach a series of lessons on nutrition, sanitation, health awareness... More
Our NE Coordinators meet with parent(s), typically the mother, and after assessing her needs prepares a lesson plan that can include up to 12 different lessons on nutrition, hygiene, sanitation, immunizations, health awareness, meal preparations and budgeting and more.  All lessons provide principles that are practical, achievable and easy to implement even for the poor.

Deworming in developing nations has been proven to be one of the most effective tools in improving a child's health, their cognitive abilities and increasing their future earning capacity.

Almost without exception, the children we seek to help suffer from intestinal worms.  Addressing these parasites is crucial for the health of the child and the long term impact of their participation in the nutrition program. More

Through donations to our deworming program we are able to contract with a Filipino pharmaceutical for the manufacture of deworming pills at a very low cost.  We then partner with provincial health departments, supplying them with needed deworming pills, which they typically lack the budget to purchase on their own.

Health department nurses then administer the pills to the children participating in our nutrition program amending the child's health record with the data.  

It is important to note that the health department is able to use the pills to administer to children who are not participating in our programs but are in need of the medication.
